No idea what you meant here. Do you think that versionned binaries
will fail to help?

Are these changes -- moving the m4 files to another subdirectory and
tweaking aclocal to follow (hence changing the effect of --acdir) --
absolutely necessary?
Off-hand I can't see any reason to perform them. Nothing prevent
these files from staying where they were; this shouldn't hinder a
parallel install of 1.6.
On the contrary, some 1.4-dependent setups do rely on these files
belonging to the aclocal/ directory, and some people do use the
--acdir switch in a way which is incompatible with the above change.

I believe we can find worse, but it's probably enough to justify
not moving these files.
