I just want to comment the format of the output,

I think it would look nicer if the foo:s and other fields were lined
up. And I'd like to make it clearer that the stars are modifiers that
aren't part of any of the other fields. I think either of
foo: /hurd/null
*foo: /hurd/hello --contents=Hello, world!
foo: /hurd/null
foo* /hurd/hello --contents=Hello, world!
foo: /hurd/null
foo:* /hurd/hello --contents=Hello, world!
would be prettier. In all cases the column of the star is not used by
any other field.
