Answering my own question, is seems that some of the tricks in the
tutorial may be appropiate here (tla set-tree-version for one).
Incidentally, when one merges in patches from someone else, does tla
implicitly make a duplicate copy of the patch, or does it conserve
space by relying on the original server in case it must be
reconstructed?
