Yes, NTFS is as slow as shite - In Dominic Giampaolo's book (File System
design with the Be File System), he did some performance tests between
ext2, XFS (on IRIX), BeFS and NTFS. NTFS came up pretty consistently at
nearly 1/2 the raw disk performance, while the others were much closer
to 100% (in the 90s usually).

There's not much that can really be done about it - ntfs is just slow
and awful. Plus there's also the fact that NT's disk caching has largely
been a joke for a number of years.

the solution is "get a better file system", but it's one that windows
users cannot (easily) take.
