You can also write a Makefile that installs files into /etc, sets the
appropriate links, and removes dangling ones and keep that checked into CVS.
Then your links are pretty much versioned. If you build in a Makefile with an
uninstall target that removes the same links the install target creates and
are conscientious about always running uninstall before checking out and
installing a new version, the results should be as good as if the whole kit
and caboodle could be checked into and versioned by CVS.
