I don't personally use normal CVS branches very often any more, but many
others do (and some very intensively, such as the FreeBSD project) and I
haven't heard of any of them having such a problem.....

Why are you doing that? Don't mess with the default branch! It's not a
user servicable part with CVS! (well except in certain situations when
using a vendor-branched module, but even then it's highly trickey to use)
