ly2dvi -p will not work unless you have the Type1 version of the
feta font installed. If you installed from a prebuilt package, 
they should be included (hopefully). If you compiled Lilypond 
yourself, make sure you have installed mftrace and then run

make pfa-fonts
make MAKE_PFA_FILES=1 install

However, the problem that Al describes is something else, 
since the fonts clearly are included in the PDF files
when he opens them in Windows. 

Have you tried to view the PDF examples (or the PDF version of
the manual) from www.lilypond.org? Do they view normally?
