using a2ps as a printer filter?

Hi all,

Has anybody used 'a2ps' as a filter for BSD-like printing system
(lpr/lpd)? I mean something that can be put into "if=" or "vf="
lines of 'printcap' configuration file to automatically convert
text files into PS but leave PS files unchanged.

It would be even nicer to have it make accounting (i.e. logging
username together with number of pages printed).

any hints?
