a2ps not recognizing troff files

How do I configure a2ps to correctly recognize troff files?  I am using
a2ps as a printfilter but a2ps is not correctly filtering the file
correctly. 

$ cat a2ps.1 | a2ps  -q -B -1 -M Letter --borders=no -o- > a2ps.man.ps

a2ps: cannot find file `roff.ssh'
a2ps: cannot find style sheet `roff': using plain style


and if I 
$ a2ps --guess troff.1
[troff.1 (plain)]
