I had to turn on

Delegation: pdf2ps pdf:ps \
pdf2ps $f #f0 && #{del.psselect} #f0 | #{del.psnup}

in /sw/etc/a2ps.cfg. Once I did that I saw that it couldn't find psnup - which 
lives in the psutils pkg. Once psutils was installed, a2ps is able to 
print .pdf files.
