I'm not sure, but the following fix might work.  Could you try this?

This error should never happen.  Could you try this, too?  And if it
doesn't work, please send me config.h.

a2ps's "delegation" may use gzip when it exists on your system.  See
etc/a2ps_cfg.in for detail.

Actually, a2ps may use bzip/bzip2 and the existence of them are
checked at build time, too.
