Worked. A valid tar file appeared in my directory.

I also tried with quotes around the http URL, in case bash was doing 
something with the percent signs. (I'm still a bash newbie, so I don't 
yet quite understand/trust what it's doing all the time.) Same behavior.

I'm running gnome-vfs version 2.8.1, in case that helps.
