That is odd. At least in Debian, the sftp support is bundled in with the rest of gnome-vfs in gnome-vfs 2.8. There is a tarball at http://www.cs.uwaterloo.ca/~bghovinen/gnome but I think that is only for older versions.
It seems to be a problem with gnome-vfs 2.8 Applying this patch from gnome CVS fixes the sftp URI handling:http://cvs.gnome.org/viewcvs/gnome-vfs/modules/sftp-method.c? r1=1.24&sortby=date&r2=1.24.2.2&only_with_tag=gnome-2 -8&makepatch=1&diff_format=u
