Hmm.  Thinking about it some more, I don't think it is a good idea.
It is a bit too hidden and may be surprising.  I am going back to your
original idea, and adding a --make-default option to "archives".  This
only works on archives that are already registered.  So if you have
something like

address@hidden
  file:///home/foo/bar
  http://foo.com/bar

you can make the http location default with

  arx archives --make-default address@hidden http

What really decided it for me is that you may not be able unregister
and reregister an archive if you are not connected to the network.  If
you had mirrored an archive and needed it when you were unhooked, you
would have to remember to reregister the archive when you get
connected again.
