Hi Robert,

things behave the way you say, but I don't think this is a bug, or at
least not in the sense you mean.  In particular, from a typographical
standpoint, I don't think you should use $<<$ to mean much less than:
$<$ is a binary relation, it has special spacing before and after, and
is not really meant to be doubled; you should really use $\ll$ instead,
as in $1 \ll 100$.

Anyhow, I'm forwarding this report upstream, as it is maybe unclear
whether "<<" and ">>" matching in math mode is useful or troublesome.
