I've tried to move all files in ELPA to a "preview" subdirectory and
add it to `load-path' and indeed it works, but I wasn't able to test
whether autoloads would have been generated properly (likely not?).

Then, ok, moving preview to top level is probably the best solution,
but, Matthew, your patch has to be improved ;-)
