Follow-up Comment #2, patch #7179 (project autoconf-archive):

Hmm.. the script doesn't seem to detect HDF5_{C,CPP,LD}FLAGS the way I expect
that it should.

At configure time I see the message
  checking for h5cc... /opt/apps/hdf5/1.8.3/bin/h5cc
  checking for HDF5 libraries... yes (version 1.8.3)
but my final Makefile contains
  HDF5_CFLAGS = 
  HDF5_CPPFLAGS = 
  HDF5_LDFLAGS = 
  HDF5_VERSION = 1.8.3
I am attaching my h5cc -showconfig output so that you can look to see what
you believe those values should be.
