Ok, so just _PUSH and _POP.

My point is that we get better abstraction by defining auxiliary
macros (Adaptors, if you're keen on patterns :-) within each layer
that interface with the layer it builds upon, so that we can uniformly
change the behavior in the upper layer without modifying the lower
layer: you just have to change the auxiliary macro.
