Very nice patch!  Please, don't forget to mention the impetus from
Paul Martinolich in the ChangeLog and THANKS.

There is something I'd like to know more precisely though: what
exactly was not portable?  Is it just the case of END, or it is true
for functions and patterns too?  It should be reported in the
documentation, and I'm in favor of adjusting just what needs to be.
Still, whatever you decide to do out of this patch is OK with me,
apply.
