Because when I worked on it Automake had no support for it, and still
has none today.  If you move to AC_CONFIG_FILES you'll lose
automatically dist'ed files.  Blee.

Ahem...  Err, this has been dropped long ago...  For a start we are
AC_PREREQuing 2.49c...  But that's a non issue since when Autoconf is
released, its configure will obviously be from a released Autoconf.

Or was the egg before the hen?
