Maybe you mean the parts that are generated _before_ option parsing? I can
understand why they are important and why they appear very early in
"configure", but maybe it's still possible to move them a bit later?

Indeed, I missed that point.

I'm still in doubt whether we need all that complexity with two logs, but
I have no reservations about your implementation anymore.

I really wish that somebody else could examine your patch before you apply
