But why didn't you just say so in the first place?  I'd have perfectly
understood an answer along the lines of: see, I'm trying to get this
long-awaited release out of the door, and the current behavior is both
what's documented and how autoconf 2.13 behaved, so let's leave it this way
to get the damn thing out of the door.  This is e.g. the current gcc 3.0
release maintainers' stance, and the only reasonable way to get any release
done in a finite amount of time :-)  Fortunately, you're not some software
vendor who needs to artificially get some bug statistic down to justify a
release.

the rest of the autoconf team for your outstanding work on making the suite
ever more useful and consistent.
