    I think it's still prudent to
    follow what the texinfo manual says about node names, namely no dots.

While this is true, it is not a limitation we want to accept (ditto for
: in node names, and other chars as well), and removing it has been on
my/our list "forever".  So it almost seems a waste to remove these dots
(which are quite meaningful, by and large) when we'll be able to put
them back in ... soon (hopefully!).

BTW, it seems the standalone info reader can handle most dots in 
index entries.  Perhaps the algorithm in info-look could be improved?
Although perhaps that also is a waste of time until we implement a truly
unambigous escape mechanism.
