Wow.  Did you try using --melt, as I suggested?  Maybe you could try
the m4 I installed again, since I had a couple of additional
initializations that were missing, and caused valgrind to barf.
(Same place, same name, different contents).

I keep on trying to reproduce your failure...  I too, am running most
recent software (Debian unstable, last upgrade: a couple of hours ago).
