How about this idea instead?

for i in `(set -o) 2>/dev/null`; do
  case $i in
  posix) set -o posix;;

Clever.  Would it not be easier thus:

case "`set -o 2>/dev/null`" in
*"posix "* ) set -o posix ;;

why bother with a loop?  :)

There's good reason for putting stuff like this in front of
a lot of eyes....Thanks, Paul.
