I don't understand:

$ foo='bar  baz'
$ touch "$foo"
$ cat <$foo
bash: $foo: ambiguous redirect
$ cat <"$foo"
$ echo $BASH_VERSION
2.05b.0(1)-release

Thanks for the review!  It just looks to me like above would be needed.
