Consider the trick I used here, for IFS in m4sh.m4:

If space-tab is really a requirement of the macro, it must be quoted
to be protected to the shell. Therefore, we should always be able
to break the quoting into two pieces, so that there is no longer a
space-tab in the .m4 file.
