Hello Paul, Ralf, and all!
I think the whole issue of changing AS_BASENAME/AS_DIRNAME now
is unfortunate. (Remember, I proposed an optimization a few weeks
ago; the answer was that it's better to change the API, and I took
for granted that this means we'll wait after 2.60.)

I think there are no big problems with 2.59c, so I guess we could have
2.60 by the end of May, and could return to this issue then.

There are a few bits from these patches which should stay:
 - it's better to leave AS_BASENAME undocumented, for now
 - it's good to remove AS_DIRNAME from that example, since it is
possible that it'll be deprecated soon
 - the addition of a missing ";;" is definitely a good bugfix
 - removing that unused dir=`AS_DIRNAME([$0])` from autoconf.as
   shouldn't hurt

But I propose to back out the other changes, including the
ChangeLog entries for these changes.

Paul, is it OK with you if I install the patch as attached to
this mail?

Have a nice day,
        Stepan Kasal
