You could require 2.59d right now; that way people are forced to use the
CVS version (I always assume CVS user to have an up to date version).
The next alpha release (I think we should call it beta- or prerelease)
will be called 2.59d[1] and is hopefully not far away; I'd still like to
make it a "if you don't find anything, this will be 2.60" type release.

[1] Autoconf currently doesn't use alternate naming for CVS and alpha
release versions, unlike, say, Libtool.
