It will make coreutils fail to configure on AIX with its limited grep.
I see no reason not to use the version that works if I have the choice.

If we decide that it's not worth maintaining such hacks, then I'm fine
with throwing it out after 2.60.  But I want 2.60 out /soon/, and for
that I want what we have to be working in practice, not beautiful in
