What you say is true. Luckily for me

     For compatibility with other ELF linkers, if the `-R' option is
     followed by a directory name, rather than a file name, it is
     treated as the `-rpath' option.

so I get there by the back door. The original problem was that there was
no -rpath -rpath-link nor -R.



(from libtool --config:
# How to pass a linker flag through the compiler.
# Flag to hardcode $libdir into a binary during linking.
# This must work even if $libdir does not exist
hardcode_libdir_flag_spec="\${wl}-rpath \${wl}\$libdir"
