I stand corrected.  Too much paranoia on my part.  POSIX is clear (only names 
consume as many characters as possible; special parameters, like 2, are not 
names, since they don't start with a letter), and I can't find any 
counterexamples.  OK to commit without those three changes, then, since I 
obviously didn't test the scenario before writing that last email.
