I did a similar patch for the build of bash used in cygwin, but it
gracefully falls back to /tmp if $TMPDIR is invalid, rather than choking.

At any rate, your patch is fine, so I applied it.  I made one tweak to fix
emacs font-lock in that area, too.  Thanks!
