Isn't that one using $U as designed?

Well that moment has already passed, but it would've been good to squash
in the patch below, to fix lots of testsuite failures.  OK?

I'm definitely for postponing this action to after the next release.


    Fix testsuite failures due to setting of $U.
    * tests/ (_AT_CHECK_ENV): Ignore setting of $U.
