Thanks for the ping.

I'm (obviously) visiting autoconf again this week (I've got some spare
time in my evenings for a few days), so maybe I'll make better progress
on my promise to get a release out the door this time around.

This is low-risk - either the new tests pass, or they don't and we
figure out why; you aren't changing semantics.

I particularly liked the strategic comments in the manual to point us
back to the testsuite.

I've read through the patch now, and think that it is appropriate to add
prior to 2.66.  Push at will.
