Liberal application of [] quotation fixed this one, too.  Thanks for 
your help and patience; I'm sorry I thought it was ALL autoconf's fault 
-- but the AC_HELP_STRING() bug definitely got me onto the wrong track, 
there.  That, and my naive assumption that "autoconf should always 
either generate an error, or a configure script containing only 
syntactically correct shell code".  Obviously, if I quote bad shell and 
tell autoconf to include it -- it will do so...
