autom4te problem

Hi All

I am new to autoconf
i downloaded autoconf binaries from sunfreeware.com
version 2.53.
when I am trying to execute this command

$autoconf configure.in

 i am getting the following error.
/usr/local/bin/autoconf[198]: /usr/local/bin/autom4te:  not 
found

I added /usr/local/bin to my path
and added

AUTOM4TE=/usr/local/bin/autom4te

what could be the problem

Please help me in this regard.
