It's not clear whether Gary using Automake or not,
but recent versions supports things like
bin_PROGRAMS = subdir/foo
subdir_foo_SOURCES = subdir/foo.c subdir/bar.c ...
AUTOMAKE_OPTIONS = subdir-objects
