A patch has already made it into libtool 1.5.x to fix the above
problem. I think the libtool developers are working towards a 1.6
release in sync with automake 1.8 and possibly autoconf 2.59.

The solution is libtool. I'm sure the libtool list would be interested
in any problems you find.
