Of course, autoconf should check for those dependencies, and exit with a helpful 
error message if they are not present. Usually a link to when to download the 
dependency is helpful.

As someone else remarked, people expect ./configure to "just work". I'd be very 
confused if it spat out help information if run with no arguments.
