Projects have dependencies. It's a fact of life. Don't try to cater to users that don't want to install the required dependencies. Just assume they have what they need. They'll get it if they need it.

Of course, autoconf should check for those dependencies, and exit with a helpful error message if they are not present. Usually a link to when to download the dependency is helpful.

As someone else remarked, people expect ./configure to "just work". I'd be very confused if it spat out help information if run with no arguments.
