The ${SHELL} stuff came from a suggestion a long time ago. Whenver I
look at the `missing' code I wonder if it really matters. Maybe we
could get rid of it. It would be nice to redesign all the aux dir
code (and more generally the require_file code) in automake. Maybe we
could come up with a more rational plan.
