The test suite is not really equipped to check exit codes
(sounds like a good task for a shell function).
Among the things I wanted to do was to get rid of all these
`$AUTOMAKE && exit 1' in the test suite, as I've discovered
many tests which were failing for the wrong reason.
The current idiom I use is
$AUTOMAKE 2>stderr && exit 1
cat stderr
grep 'expected diagnostic' stderr
Maybe this should become
AUTOMAKE_error n
grep 'expected diagnostic' stderr
(Where AUTOMAKE_error will make sure that
$AUTOMAKE exits with $? = n.)
