Oops, you're right. I tested it with Heirloom sh, and indeed it 
complained with "cannot return when not in function", but didn't 
reflect the failure in the script exit status -- and I didn't look at
test logs :-(  -- my bad.

Thanks for having looked into this and all those other patches.
