Darn, we need another name: 'archive' is likely too common when automake
is going to put all files with that name in the distribution of each

I don't find arlib so bad, except that it sounds a bit like a library
rather than a program.
arlib is already taken by some package of that name; let's go with
ar-lib which seems unused, judging from codesearch, fairly close to
the original suggestion, and hyphens are sort of GNU-ish anyway. ;-)
That is, unless you dislike it.
