BTW, how should I call that temporary branch?

Well, anyway, I applied the offending change to maint, and pushed
after merging to master and branch-1.11, which shouldn't be merged
into other branches AFAIK; so we should be pretty safe in this case.

Good. Because now I'm dealing with the autotools-override branch,
and I'd like to finish it off before doing anything else on Automake.
