And here is my re-roll, as promised.  Among the changes:

  - tweaks to comments and commit messages;
  - style fixes to the code, and more sanity checks;
  - dropped the redundant parts of the testsuite adjustments;
  - extended the relevant parts of the testsuite a little;
  - updated the test 'aclocal-macrodirs.tap' as well;
  - added a NEWS entry;
  - added Pavel's name and address to THANKS;

Pavel, since the adjusted patches are still in your name, I'd
like your ACK before pushing.  And of course, further reviews
(by you or anyone else) would be welcome.

I will push in a couple of days.
