I fully agree with this approch. I believe you should be allowed to
checking such patched without approval. But please be careful. I remember
that Tom said maybe a year ago that not all `local' can be replaced with
`my' - there are cases where the name is used in the subfunctions.

So please be careful, and alway run the testsuite before commit.
Also it would be nice if you checked on some projects that the makefiles
don't change. I see you are doing it with Autoconf. Consider a bigger
project for the test (Lesstif should be fine).

Note that I'm not asking you to check the correctness of the makefiles (it
would be too time-consuming for huge projects), just make sure that they
don't change.

You have my full support if you do so.
