Are you using Automake?  It's not obvious from your mail.

If I recall correctly, the Swig manual explains how to do that.
(The Swig mailing lists are probably a better place to discuss
this.)

It would be a lot different if you were actually trying to use
Swig + Automake + Libtool.  Let me know if this is your case.
