New platforms are introduced very slowly (and more slowly every year). People who are using a bleeding-edge platform can expect to do extra work. The existing config.guess script is likely to be fine for 99.9% of the user base. For most properly written packages, it is not fatal if config.guess does not successfully guess the platform. Even new platforms are likely to be guessed "correctly" due to standard programs like 'uname'.

Due to the above, I would not encourage users or platform administrators to update config.guess and config.sub without also updating the associated autotools to match.
