What do i put into to get a program installed
into /usr/bin? (I just read the autoconf and automake manuals)

Nothing, you just
  ./configure --prefix=/usr

or, if you want only /usr/bin but everything else below /usr/local,
  ./configure --bindir=/usr/bin

Hope that helps.

Yes it did.

When i do "make distcheck", is there a way to get a list of where all
the files get installed?

Also, how do i install a directory of data files? I tried:

  dist_pkgdata_DATA = sysdefaults/avk/

i get (from make distcheck):

/usr/bin/install: omitting directory `../../src/sysdefaults/avk/'

because /usr/bin/install didn't have the -d option.
